AWS IoT SiteWise has announced the general availability of a new generative AI-powered industrial assistant.

The ‘AWS IoT SiteWise Assistant’ offers insights and problem-solving capabilities following natural language prompts by the user.

It also provides information based on operational data and other sources to help users make more informed decisions.

AWS IoT SiteWise describes itself as a managed service that eases the collection, organisation, and monitoring of industrial equipment data at scale.

In a co-authored AWS blog post by Pradeep Kaushik, Senior Product Manager at Amazon Web Services and Johnny Wu, Senior Developer Advocate, AWS IoT SiteWise team at AWS, the key features of the solution were outlined: “The introduction of AWS IoT SiteWise Assistant builds upon this robust data foundation.

“By consolidating dispersed information and adapting it to meet diverse user needs, the Assistant tackles the complexities of modern industrial environments providing a unified approach for industrial data understanding and analysis through contextualised summarisation of your industrial environment, deep-dive into insights with Q&A, and data analysis to accelerate decision-making.”

To interact with operational data, users can simply input natural language prompts like “What assets have alarms?” or “How do I fix the wind turbine’s RPM issue?”.

The assistant understands your industrial data context coming from sensors, machines, and related processes. It then integrates information from your central knowledge base through Amazon Kendra to supply users with these data-based insights.

The assistant also has new APIs that enable industrial solutions to access these insights on-demand.

Developers can incorporate capabilities into industrial applications via updated IoT AppKit widgets, such as chatbots, KPI gauges, and line charts.

A preview of the AWS IoT Sitewise Monitor portal with an integrated assistant gives users a no-code experience for viewing important insights.

The AWS blog gave the example of a plant manager who needs to check on the operations in the factory. The new assistant can generate a comprehensive summary of active alerts or alarms within the facility, saving them valuable time, which would otherwise be spent searching through pages of data across different dashboards.

They can instead receive an instant view of critical issues, affected assets, and possible impacts, resulting in the overall enhancement of operational efficiency.

Kaushik and Wu listed a number of issues that the generative AI assistant can help resolve: “The AWS IoT SiteWise Assistant is a paradigm shift in industrial data interaction.

“By enabling users to summarise complex situations, deep-dive into the data with natural language queries, and rapidly analyse information, it paves the way for smarter, faster decision-making in industrial environments.

“It addresses the key challenges of spread-out context, growing knowledge bases, and diverse user experience needs, providing a unified, adaptable solution for modern industrial operations.”

AI Research

Earlier this month, Amazon announced it is investing $110 million into universities to advance research AI using Trainium chips.

The programme, known as Build on Trainium, enables researchers to build new AI architectures, machine learning (ML) libraries, and performance upgrades for large-scale AWS Trainium UltraClusters.

It provides research and training opportunities, which Amazon says is “sparking innovation for the frontier models of the future”.
