The inaugural LlamaCon, held at Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters on April 29, showcased a company with big AI ambitions, if not always the most groundbreaking announcements.
Fashionably Late – But What’s New in the Meta-verse?
So what did Meta actually announce at its first AI developer conference? The headliners included:
- A standalone Meta AI app: Essentially rebranding its smart glasses Meta View app, this puts Meta’s AI assistant into a dedicated mobile experience with voice capabilities and a social “discover feed” showing how others use the AI.
- The Llama API preview: A cloud-based service allowing developers to access Llama models without managing infrastructure—just one line of code and you’re in business. It includes tools for fine-tuning and evaluation, starting with the Llama 3.3 8B model.
- Faster inference partnerships: Collaborations with Cerebras and Groq to deliver faster inference through the Llama API. According to the Forbes article, Cerebras-powered Llama 4 Scout achieves 2,600 tokens per second compared to approximately 130 tokens per second for ChatGPT.
- Security tools: A suite including Llama Guard 4, LlamaFirewall, and Llama Prompt Guard 2, addressing enterprise security concerns that often prevent wider AI adoption.
- $1.5 million in Llama Impact Grants: Ten international recipients received funding to support projects using Llama for positive social impact.
All good stuff. However, the previously teased Llama 4 reasoning model and a teacher model that some expected to be announced. These no-shows left some AI enthusiasts and experts feeling a bit underwhelmed by the event.
Zuckerberg’s Open Source Crusade
During LlamaCon, Mark Zuckerberg made his strategy crystal clear in conversation with Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi. He views any AI lab that makes its models openly available—including DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen—as allies “in the battle against closed model providers:
Part of the value around open source is that you can mix and match…This is part of how I think open source basically passes in quality all the closed source [models]… It feels like sort of an unstoppable momentum.
Whether this stems from genuine dedication to open innovation or simply offers a convenient way to stand apart from competitors is up for debate.
But there’s no denying that Meta is betting big on AI infrastructure, with reports pointing to planned investments of up to $65 billion this year alone on AI expansion.
Playing the Long Game
While Meta may not be leading the AI race in terms of model capabilities, its approach has some compelling advantages. The open-source nature of Llama models gives developers flexibility that closed systems can’t match. And with Meta’s massive user base across its platforms, scale is certainly on its side.
Beyond LlamaCon, Meta has been making moves in the hardware space as well.
As reported by AI Today, the company has begun testing its first custom-designed chip for training artificial intelligence models, which could eventually reduce its dependence on external suppliers like NVIDIA.
