During a Council on Foreign Relations CEO speaker keynote this week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei made bombshell predictions regarding AI’s abilities and its potential effect on programmer job roles and beyond.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said:

Geting to the job side of this, I do have a fair amount of concern about this. On one hand, I think comparative advantage is a very powerful tool, if I look at coding, programming, which one area where AI is making the most progress, what we are finding is we are not far from a world, I think we’ll be there in three to six months, where AI is writing 90% of the code. Then, in 12 months, we may be in a world where AI is writing essentially all of the code.

Amodei Warns for Existential Disruption

The statement comes as the CEO discussed the future of U.S. AI leadership at the Council on Foreign Relations event, which aims to help audiences digest the role of technological innovation during times of major geopolitical strategic competition, in this case, the disruptive AI market.

Speaking on the economic side of AI, Amodei calls AI’s potential disruption a worry and “existential.”

Amodei also added:

In the short run, we are going to need to manage the disruption, even as the pie gets much larger. In the long run, as I’ve said, we’re going to need to think about a world where AI—and I don’t want to lie about this—I really think this is where this is going—is going to be better than almost all humans at almost all things.

For now, the best thing industries can do is manage and understand where AI fits into the workplace, such as whether that technology will augment a worker’s responsibilities or replace that worker. In response to this prediction, Anthropic is working to deploy an economic index to understand how businesses use AI and, in turn, how this affects elements like economic growth rates and tax.

“I just invite you to consider the hypothetical and start considering the possibility of crazy things like that now,” remarked Amodei.

Amodei said:

The whole population, again, thinks of this stuff as chatbots. If we say this is dangerous, if we say this could replace all human work, it sounds crazy, because what they are looking at is something that in some cases seems pretty frivolous, but they don’t know what’s about to hit them.

Anthropic Valued Over $60bn

Following the successful launch of the genAI platform Claude 3.7, the four-year-old artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has raised $3.5 billion in a new funding round, tripling its valuation to $61.5 billion.

This funding round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, which invested $1 billion in Anthropic. Other investors included Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.

Reports indicate that the round was oversubscribed several times, suggesting investors remain optimistic about heavily loss-making AI startups despite concerns that competitors like DeepSeek are narrowing the gap with more affordable models and advanced AI technology.
