Lumen Technologies is helping to increase Meta’s artificial intelligence network capacity.

The technological partnership will provide a dedicated interconnection for Meta’s “industry-leading” infrastructure.

According to the US telecoms company, Lumen, the expanded network adds a further differentiator to Meta’s AI offering and bolsters its overall standing when it comes to AI development.

Ashley Haynes-Gaspar, Lumen’s EVP and Chief Revenue Officer, commented on the work it has done to grow Meta’s network capacity:

“We’re enabling one of the biggest expansions of network capacity in our lifetime.

“We’ve transformed our company to meet this demand. As Meta’s customers use more AI services across its platforms, we’re helping provide Meta with a seamless, effortless, and flexible network that will meet its growing needs.”

Secure On-Demand Bandwidth

Lumen adds that this increased flexibility comes through secure-on-demand bandwidth that is capable of supporting Meta’s complex computing requirements and serve billions of people on a daily basis.

Lumen is supplying Meta with Private Connectivity Fabric, which is “uniquely” positioned to establish the necessary network capacity to power AI solutions.

The solution includes dedicated access to current fibre routes, as well as new routes, between data centres.

As AI becomes increasingly popular, Lumen suggests that companies should look to prepare for these technologies by ensuring they have a reliable network in place.

Alex-Handrah Aimé, director of Meta’s Network Investments, outlined some of the capabilities of its AI technologies: “Our AI tools are performing increasingly more complex tasks including enabling conversations in a variety of languages and translating text to images in real time, while helping people interact with the world around them in new, immersive ways.

“We are excited to work with Lumen to use this advanced network to provide scale and reliability for seamless experiences.”

Google Cloud Partnership

Lumen has also recently announced a new partnership with Google Cloud that will enable digital transformation at Lumen and AI innovation for Google customers.

Google Cloud will power AIOps and data insights across its network, assisting Lumen in its aim of improving operational efficiencies.

With Google Cloud’s infrastructure, databases, BigQuery data, and analytics platform, Lumen has created its AI ‘Digital Twin’ capable of giving real-time insights through its network.

Lumen can then use these insights to detect and resolve network issues before they affect customers.

Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform and Gemini models will also allow for new applications to cut down on unnecessary technician call outs, improve support, and enhance web searches.

In return, as it did with Meta, Lumen is expanding Google Cloud’s network capabilities with its own “extensive”  and “diverse” network to support Google Cloud services and AI innovations.

It will also deploy its Private Connectivity Fabric to enable access to fibre in Lumen’s network and install new fibre on and new and existing routes.

Meta: AI News

Last month, Meta announced it will soon begin training its artificial intelligence technology with public content shared by UK Facebook and Instagram users.

The company has faced a backlash to its plans online, particularly regarding the recent revelation that it has been using historical Facebook data of Australian users going back as far as 2007.
