OpenAI has introduced the ChatGPT Pro monthly plan to provide customers with the “best of” its models and tools.

ChatGPT Pro allows researchers, engineers, and others using AI to increase their productivity and keep up with the latest generative AI technology.

Pro plan holders will be able to leverage a version of its most intelligent model, which offers the most reliable responses, according to evaluations by external testers.

The ChatGPT creator, OpenAI, outlined the details of the plan in its recent announcement: “Today, we’re adding ChatGPT Pro, a $200 monthly plan that enables scaled access to the best of OpenAI’s models and tools.

“This plan includes unlimited access to our smartest model, OpenAI o1, as well as to o1-mini, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice.

“It also includes o1 pro mode, a version of o1 that uses more compute to think harder and provide even better answers to the hardest problems.

“In the future, we expect to add more powerful, compute-intensive productivity features to this plan.”

ChatGPT Pro Performance

The o1 pro performs better than both the o1 and o1-preview when it comes to meeting certain machine learning benchmarks for maths, science and coding.

As a result, testers found this particularly improved responses across areas like data science, programming, and case law analysis.

Pro users can access o1 pro mode by selecting it in the ‘model picker’ and asking a question.

Users should expect for answers to take a little longer than usual to be generated. It will display its progress in a dedicated progress bar and send an in-app notification in case you switch to use another application while you are waiting.

OpenAI has also decided to setup ten ChatGPT Pro grants for medical researchers in the US, with plans to expand the grant to other areas of research in the future.

Nicholas Turley, Head of Product, ChatGPT at OpenAI, endorsed the new Pro plan via LinkedIn:

“ChatGPT Pro provides a way for researchers, engineers, and other individuals who use research-grade intelligence daily to accelerate their productivity and be at the cutting edge of advancements in AI.

“It’s not for everyone but I think it’s the beginning of an era where AI can help the smartest people in the world solve the hardest problems. And for everyone else — the full version o1 is available to 100% of Plus users.”

OpenAI in the News

Last month, Softbank revealed its intention to invest up to $1.5 billion in OpenAI shares via a tender offer aimed at current and former employees, signalling another major twist in the race for AI supremacy.

The $6.6 billion raise valued the company at $150 billion and workers now have until December 24 to decide whether to accept the offer, which allows former and current OpenAI employees to sell their shares at $210 each.

At the end of October, ChatGPT announced the launch of ChatGPT Search, an AI-powered search engine set to compete seriously with Google and Microsoft Bing.

This feature promises to give users real-time updates on sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather, and more. It leverages real-time web search and collaborates with various news and data providers to deliver up-to-the-minute information.
